I know, grilled cheese is one of those staple foods you learn how to make as a kid, perfect in college, and fall back on as an adult. I recently went to Landmark bar & grille near my home and had the best grilled cheese I've ever eaten, and this is my DIY attempt at it. I still need to perfect it, but I think I'm heading in the right direction.
Ingredients
2 thick (about 1/2") slices of french/artisan bread
1 tablespoon butter/margarine
1 slice sharp cheddar cheese
1 slice monterey jack cheese
1 slice gruyere cheese
- Slice the bread as thick as you like, mine was about 3/4 inch thick. It's best slightly thinner to allow the cheese to melt properly.
- Butter one side of each slice of bread.
- Place one slice of bread, butter side down, on a griddle or frying pan on medium-low heat (I used my handy dandy George Foreman griddle @300F). Layer the different cheeses and top with the other slice of bread, butter side up.
- Cook about 5 minutes on each side, or until the cheese looks nice and melty. I ended up covering mine (with a pot because I don't have a tall enough lid) since the bread was a bit too thick.
Remove from heat, and enjoy!
The gruyere I bought had a smoky flavor and really added a lot to the sandwich. And I'm not going to lie, that was the most I've ever spent on cheese! I definitely won't be making a habit of using all this "fancy cheese", but I figure it's okay to splurge (with permission of the hubby) in the name of a culinary experiment!
